I’m a Copywriter for Female Entrepreneurs…Does That Make Me a Bad Feminist?
Am I a bad feminist if I call myself a female entrepreneur?
Men certainly don’t identify themselves as male entrepreneurs… So why am I doing it?
Am I perpetuating patriarchy by highlighting the gender-based differences between a male entrepreneur and myself?
After all, deep down, what I really want is gender equality.
To be compensated equally for the exact 👏 same 👏 skills. 👏
To not jump through one million hoops to prove a point that would be received as fact if a man said it.
To be heard.
To be valued.
To be respected.
So, my question to myself is: do I want to continue qualifying my entrepreneurship with the term “female”?
After thinking about it — and I’ve thought about it a LOT — the answer is: Hell yes!
That’s because when we call ourselves a “female entrepreneur,” it MEANS something different…
It means we have overcome a very unique and challenging set of obstacles, gender biases, limiting beliefs, and patriarchal constraints.
It means we have unearthed our own agency… An agency that has always existed but seemed impossible to access because of societal norms.
It means we kicked archaic expectations to the curb… We’ve painfully shed roles we’ve been conditioned to believe were our sole identity.
When a woman unapologetically takes up space in a male-dominated industry, it’s a *huge* achievement for us as a collective. It’s so badass that it deserves to be distinguished as a separate accomplishment.
What launches us into female entrepreneurship?
We’re a fiery bunch… And where there’s fire, there’s always a source for the flame.
According to a recent study, the number one motivator for women to start a business is their search for autonomy.
And I have to say, this was absolutely the case for me.
Before it ended, my marriage had done a number on my self-worth.
It was a traditional marriage. You know… the kind where the woman is expected to stay very, very small.
For 10 years, I had no voice. No agency. And my dreams weren’t allowed.
Taking up any amount of space was simply not an option. And things only went smoothly when I abandoned myself and my own needs.
I’m so thankful for pioneers like Glennon Doyle. She helped me discover my own autonomy, understand why I hadn’t accessed it before, and, most importantly, sparked a passion for independence.
These days, I’m an autonomy addict, and I seek it out in every area of my life. So naturally, I found a way to be my own boss, make my own schedule, and decide my own worth.
And I know of many women on the exact same journey.
Why else do women want to become their own boss?
To put it plainly: we’re sick of being objectified and sexually harassed in the workplace.
Way too many of us have been burned by particularly exploitative experiences… In fact, most women have been a victim of sexual harassment at work.
And we’re simply NOT here for it anymore.
We bring so much to the table, and we deserve to be compensated fairly for our skills, our time, our talents, and — let’s call it what it is — our overall badassery.
When we’re our own boss, we won’t have to accept our supervisor’s full-body gropes in exchange for an overdue raise.
When we’re our own boss, our continued employment won’t ever hinge on our reaction to an unsolicited dick pic.
When we’re our own boss, our work has the chance to speak for itself.
Women-owned businesses are on the rise.
The world’s thoughts on gender roles are shifting (thank goddess), and it’s becoming increasingly more common for women to start their own businesses. The amount of female entrepreneurs has grown an astonishing 114% over the last 20 years. And according to American Express, there are almost 13 million of us in the U.S.!
It’s so inspiring to me. Everywhere I look, I see:
Creative women launching design businesses
Female experts establishing authority and developing online courses
Mompreneurs crushing it with their side hustles
Feminist visionaries changing the narrative for women everywhere
Out of all of the companies in the U.S., 42% of them are women-owned. And if you’re one of these women, you’re part of a movement.
Look out, guys. 👀
